World Down Syndrome Day, Friday March 21, 2025 [English/Spanish]
World Down Syndrome Day is on March 21st every year. It's a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The goal is to help people understand and support those with Down syndrome better. The date being the 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Rio Vista Elementary Recognized
Rio Vista Elementary Principal Beverly Garnica presented an update on the programs, activities, and initiatives for the 2024-2025 school year, and recognized Classified Employee of the Month, Maria Ramirez - Yard Supervisor, and Certificated Employee of the Month, Sonia Ibarra - Counselor. Superintendent Schieferle, Fillmore Police & Fire Departments Read To FUSD Students
Today marked the beginning of Read Across America Week at the Fillmore Unified School District. Superintendent Schieferle, Captain Malagon, and Deputies from Fillmore Police Department and Fillmore Fire Department began their day by reading to students at Mountains Vista Elementary School.
The Fillmore Police Department said, “Today we celebrate the joy of reading and the doors it opens to endless adventures. This morning, we had the privilege of spending time with students to get the week started. Thank you to Fillmore Fire for joining us in reading to as many schools as possible!”
Assistant Superintendent Huang Read Across America Week
On March 3, 2025, Fillmore Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Isaac Huang had the joy of visiting our schools as "Thing 3" from Dr. Seuss's world to spread the magic of reading!
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Isaac Huang said, “Seeing our students' excited faces as we talked about the adventures waiting for them in books was truly heartwarming. A special shoutout to our Fillmore High Football team and local community members who joined us at Mountain Vista today to read stories to our students for Read Across America Week! What amazing role models showing our younger learners that reading is for everyone.”
Remember what Dr. Seuss taught us: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!"
Dr. Huang said, “To all our student learners: Keep turning those pages and become the voracious readers we know you can be!”

Congratulations, Ms. Trina Tafoya for being selected as the 2025 Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), Region 13, Special Education Administrator of the Year!
Ms. Trina Tafoya is an exemplary leader whose visionary approach, dedication to inclusion, and unwavering commitment to student well-being have transformed the Special Education department at Fillmore Unified School District.
As the Director of Special Education, Trina has been instrumental in restructuring Fillmore Unified’ s special education program, ensuring that students with disabilities receive equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities. Through her leadership, the district has significantly expanded inclusion models, allowing students with disabilities to learn alongside their general education peers.
Her leadership has brought meaningful and measurable progress, and her continued efforts promise lasting benefits for students, families, and the community.
Ms. Tafoya, along with other award recipients will be recognized on May 2nd in Ventura at a regional awards ceremony.

Booty Sanchez Varsity Baseball Field Opening Ceremony
At 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday February 19, 2025, the Fillmore Unified School District (FUSD) celebrated the grand opening and dedication of Fillmore High School’s (FHS) new Booty Sanchez Varsity Baseball Field located along the intersection of 3rd Street and Shiells Drive.
The event was attended by FUSD governing board members, superintendent and staff, FHS principal, staff, and students, the Sanchez family, The Friends of Booty, and a stadium full of Fillmore and Piru athletic boosters and Flashes baseball fans.
FUSD Superintendent Christine Schieferle said, “We would like to thank Debbie Sanchez and the Sanchez family for attending the event and for supporting the new field that will continue honor Booty’s contribution to our community. We would also like to thank the Fillmore-Piru community for approving Bond Measure V that helped provide funding for this beautiful state-of-the-art baseball stadium that will be enjoyed by students and families for generations to come.”
Booty's wife Debbie Sanchez said, "From the bottom of our hearts, the Sanchez Family would like to thank the community of Fillmore and the school board for continuing to honor the legacy of Booty Sanchez."
The event ended with the Sanchez family throwing ceremonial first pitches to The Friends of Booty.
The season opening baseball game that followed the opening ceremony resulted in a big Flashes win. Final score Varsity Flashes 14, Oxnard’s Santa Clara High 3. Go Flashes!

National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day 2025
Please join the entire Fillmore Unified School District in a moment of thanks and appreciation for our wonderful School Resource Officers, Deputy Yolanda Avila, and Deputy Ismael Rubalcava. School Resource Officers (SROs) play a vital role in enhancing safety, security, and fostering a positive learning environment within our schools. SROs are carefully selected, specifically trained, sworn law enforcement officers, with an impact that goes well beyond law enforcement. They establish meaningful mentorship relationships that leave a lasting impression on students and staff.
